Digestive Issues in the Menopausal Transition

Hormonal imbalance can create havoc on women’s digestive systems! Here are some of the most common symptoms:

  • Bloating (You can look pregnant! I did!)

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Gas

  • Intestinal pain

  • Nausea

  • Food sensitivities

Are there nutritional changes that women can make to feel better? Yes!

  1. Focus on fibre. Most men and women don’t even eat half of their daily requirement. Besides keeping you full longer and thus preventing overeating, fiber also absorbs water, feeds your microbiome, and makes elimination much easier.

  2. Avoid ultraprocessed foods. Translation: stay away from packaged food with a long list of ingredients - many of which you can’t pronounce!

  3. Stay hydrated. It helps to move your food through your digestive tract.

  4. Avoid or limit alcohol. It is dehydrating and can impact digestive health.

  5. Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. They provide steady energy, essential nutrients, and they encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in your colon which positively affects not just your digestive system, but your mood, and energy, too!

If you’re looking for some motivation to move you and your gut in the right direction, check out Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, a world-renowned gastroenterologist.

I highly recommend his books: Fiber Fueled and Plant Powered Plus. I found them both to be transformational.
