A changing body shape in perimenopause can feel unnerving for women, to say the least!
When estrogen decreases, as women get closer to menopause, more fat is deposited in the abdominal area, and it’s often stored as visceral fat, which is more of a health risk than subcutaneous fat.
Increased cortisol levels and decreased insulin sensitivity can also result in significant belly fat accumulation.
In addition, women in the menopausal transition can get cravings for sweet, high calorie, low nutrient foods - sometimes in an attempt to get energy, when fatigue is a primary symptom - particularly if women struggle with sleep issues, due to fluctuating hormones and increased stress.
Dietary choices are so important during this time. You can’t outexercise a bad diet!
Whole foods with a high protein content to increase satiety are the keys to keeping fat at bay.
Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. You want to select foods that promote slow digestion, which results in feeling full longer.
I start off every day with a chocolate smoothie that’s like eating dessert! The best part is that it’s good for you!
Here’s the recipe:
Two cups of oat milk
One and a half frozen bananas
Half a cup of ice
One tablespoon of pumpkin seeds
One tablespoon of chia seeds
One tablespoon of smooth peanut butter
One quarter cup of raw oats
Two teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa
Two dates or one tablespoon of pure maple syrup
This recipe is pure decadence, and it’s filled with good fats, slow metabolizing carbs, lots of fiber, and just the right amount of sweetness! It keeps me full for hours, so there’s no snacking before lunch!
I highly recommend it! Give it a try. 😊
